Private John Joseph Beggie
John Joseph Beggie (or Beggy) was born on 3 March 1878 at Oristown, County Meath, the first of six children of farmer James Beggie and his wife Kate. On 26 November 1905 he married Kathleen McCabe, housemaid, of Ludlow Street, Navan. By the time of the 1911 Census he was working as a groom in the household of Henry Tyacke, RIC county inspector, at Dunmoe, Co. Meath, his wife and their children living nearby in Academy Street, Navan.
Beggie enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 10 June and 6 July 1915 (No.1699 - later Corps of Hussars No.71508). He embarked for France on 17 November 1915 as part of F Squadron. In June 1916 F Squadron joined with two other squadrons to become the 2nd North Irish Horse Regiment. When that regiment was dismounted and absorbed into the 9th Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers, Beggie remained with the North Irish Horse, either at Antrim or as part of the 1st Regiment.
On 22 March 1919 he was transferred to Class Z Army Reserve.
He died in 1964.
